Reeded and Refined
A Fresh Take on a Familiar Home

After living in the home for many years, the homeowner was ready for a kitchen that better reflected her current style and the way she uses the space today. The existing kitchen felt dark and dated, but functionality was just as important as giving it a visual refresh.

The cooktop took up much of the island, leaving very little uninterrupted counter space for prep and everyday use. A closet located along the main kitchen wall also interrupted the cabinetry and made the room feel more divided. The homeowner wanted better flow, more usable workspace, and a kitchen that felt brighter, cleaner, and more intentional.

The Original Kitchen

Rethinking the Workspace

Improving the layout was one of the biggest priorities. Moving the cooking area off the island immediately created a much larger, more functional work surface and allowed the island to become a true prep and gathering space. A prep sink was added to make the island even more useful and create separate work zones within the kitchen.

Removing the existing closet gave us the opportunity to rethink the entire back wall. The refrigerator and freezer are now concealed behind cabinetry panels, creating a clean, continuous look while keeping cold storage conveniently located. An appliance garage provides a dedicated place for smaller appliances, helping keep the new countertops open and uncluttered.

Together, these changes created a much more natural flow between cooking, prep, cleanup, and storage.

The Transformation

A Transitional Mix of Details

The homeowner wanted the new kitchen to feel fresh and updated without becoming overly contemporary. White cabinetry brightens the room, while the dark island and back wall add contrast and give the kitchen depth.

Custom details bring personality to the space. The reeded island adds texture, with metal caps on the legs giving it a more refined finish. On the back wall, a glass and metal display cabinet breaks up the darker cabinetry and creates a beautiful place for decorative pieces.

The backsplash, cabinetry colors, hardware, and lighting were all selected to work together rather than compete for attention. A statement chandelier brings warmth to the center of the room, while thoughtfully selected wall lighting and more discreetly placed outlets help keep the finished design polished and intentional.

The Finished Space

A Kitchen That Works Better

The biggest difference between the before and after is how much more usable the kitchen has become. There is significantly more uninterrupted counter space, better-defined work zones, improved storage, and a more comfortable flow throughout the room.

At the same time, the combination of classic cabinetry, modern details, contrasting colors, and custom features gives the kitchen its transitional character. It feels like a completely new space, while still feeling at home in a house the homeowner has loved for years.
